Washington : US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized China for its trade policy, especially its controls on rare earth exports. In a lengthy social media post on Friday, Trump said that China's attitude is extremely bad and disappointing. Trump has threatened to impose heavy tariffs to counter Beijing's policy. He also said that he is now planning not to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the summit to be held later this month.
China expanded its rare earth export controls on Thursday, adding five new elements and additional checks for semiconductor users. China appears to be trying to tighten controls on this sector ahead of talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. This strong statement from Donald Trump has come on this issue.
Donald Trump has called China's policies an attempt to hold the world hostage and has stressed the need for retaliatory economic action by the US. Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social, "China has become very aggressive. It is imposing export controls on rare minerals and almost every manufactured material, even if the item is not made in China. This move will cause hardship for every country in the world."
Trump further stated that the US relationship with China has been good over the past six months. Therefore, this trade move is even more shocking. China has gradually monopolized all rare minerals, which is a dangerous and hostile move. The US also has many untapped natural resources. Now, it seems, the time has come to utilize them.
Trump said that China is sending letters to countries around the world, detailing which substances will be banned from export. He further wrote, "I haven't felt the need to discuss this with Chinese President Xi Jinping. I had planned to meet with him this month, but it seems the need is gone. I probably won't be meeting with him again."
